Start Point: Grizedale Forest Visitor Centre car park
Length: 6.1km (3.8miles) with 254m (833ft) of ascent
Time: 4 hours (approx.)
Grade: 3 (see grade description below)
A walk from the Grizedale Forest Visitor Centre using good forest tracks and some rougher footpaths to the summit of Carron Crag (at 314m one of Wainwright's Outlying Fells) with excellent views of the southern Lakeland fells (weather permitting!). There is also a chance to see several of the Grizedale Forest sculptures on the route.
Most of the paths are good forest tracks but there is one ascent on a rougher footpath which can be muddy and slippy in wet weather. There is also a short steep ascent and descent to and from the Carron Crag summit.
Grade 3 walks may include some moderate ascents and descents. The path surface might be earth, grass or stone and – while generally firm – it will have some loose or uneven sections, or be soft underfoot after rain. You will also encounter steps, gates or stiles and narrow sections. Most of our grade 3 walks are suitable for families.
Participants will need to dress appropriately for the terrain and weather and bring a packed lunch.
