Carry on Cargo Bike: The future of local deliveries?’

Currently over 50% of the world’s population live in cities and almost three quarters of Europe’s population currently live in urban or suburban areas. Urban congestion is not only contributing to an increase in air pollution and energy consumption, but congestion can also increase the length of private and commercial journeys, exacerbating the problem and creating unattractive cities. For cities to meet their carbon targets long term, rapid and meaningful change is required. One solution may be found on two wheels. Electric cargo bikes, or e-cargo bikes, provide a means of sustainable transport operating within the compact confines of city centres, often highly congested spaces. Alleviating stresses on these freight flows can have a positive impact on productivity, congestion, health and wellbeing, as well as carbon management.
Presentation 1: Dr Luke Blazejewski, Dr Graeme Sherriff and Dr Nick Davies (Healthy Active Cities, University of Salford
Presenters will speak about their recent study looking at the role of e-cargo bikes in Greater Manchester – the barriers, opportunities, and the potential for e-cargo bikes moving forward.
Presentation 2: Chorlton Bike Deliveries
Chorlton Bike Deliveries is a free, resident-led scheme established to support the community during the Covid-19 virus by offering delivery of food, using cargo bikes and bike trailers, to residents who find it hard to get to the shop. They want to help customers who are vulnerable or isolated and build a kinder and connected community whilst simultaneously supporting independent traders and cooperatives and seeking alternatives to car use.
Presentation 3: Pedal Me
Pedal Me is a pedal-powered passenger and cargo service operating in London. CEO Ben Knowles will discuss their experiences of riding the bikes for cargo and passenger services on the roads, the challenges this entails, and the role of technology within their service, as well as their experiences during COVID-19.
