The EU car CO2 standards have driven the boom in electric car sales seen across Europe over the last two years. The revision of these rules - a key part of the EU’s Green Deal and Fit for 55 climate package - will be crucial in determining the future & affordability of zero emission cars and the competitiveness of the car industry in Europe.

With plug-in vehicle sales taking off faster than policy makers anticipated during the last revision of the CO2 standards back in 2018, legislators now have a golden opportunity to align the regulation with the new market, and climate change, reality. With cars the largest source of oil imports, this is also Europe’s chance to stop subsidising Putin wars or other undemocratic regimes.
