Event description
An evening of experimental drawing, exploring the gardens around us and the outer reaches of our imaginations as the sun sets.

About this event

During this magical evening, we invite all creative minds - artists, architects, students and visionaries to participate in our collaborative drawing project – Cosmocartos – and to explore and redraw the worlds that exist between reality and our imagination.

Our dusky explorations into map-making will experiment with how we perceive and translate space through weird and wonky drawing processes, using found materials and natural inks made from the gardens themselves. Led by landscape and architectural researchers, artists and curators Kirsty Badenoch and Sayan Skandarajah, together we will explore quick-fire, large-scale and experimental expressions in mark-making, working intuitively and sensorially with the spaces around us. Anticipate the unexpected and to chart the uncharted, we invite you to get messy and expand your own drawing processes.

A delicious vegan light supper will be cooked up by Omved’s team of creative chefs, working with seasonal produce from the garden. The evening offers a unique and intimate opportunity to view the exhibition, and explore the RIBA award-winning Omved Greenhouse and gardens in private.

All drawing materials will be provided, however we welcome you to bring your own tools, papers and devices if you wish to.

Drawing Laboratory

The salon is part of the Drawing Laboratory: A series of experimental workshops exploring how we navigate, perceive and translate the world around us through drawing.

Through a series of evening salons, day and weekend workshops, we invite school children and youth groups, art and architecture students, artists, makers, growers and other creatives to participate in a giant collaborative map of the imagination. The map will be drawn, redrawn and re-re-drawn over the course of the festival, by the eyes, hands and imaginations of many.

With a multi-disciplinary approach to speculative drawing and map-making practices at all different scales, the Drawing Laboratory will uncover, interpret and reimagine the hidden secrets and stories around us; exploring how we experience place, both individually and as a collective. Each workshop will trace, translate and re-imagine a new layer each responding to the ideas and drawings of the last. Through an additive and open-ended process, we will together build, grow and populate the cities, gardens and mindscapes of our collective imagination. Together we will draw Cosmocartos.

The Drawing Laboratory collaborative map will be exhibited in the greenhouses as it emerges over the course of the festival. Its official inauguration will be on our last day - Friday 30 July, where we invite all participants to celebrate their part in it’s making.

The salon is set in the Cartographies of the Imagination exhibition, showcasing four years of drawing research by landscape and architectural researchers Kirsty Badenoch and Sayan Skandarajah, mapping lost and invisible land- and city-scapes.
