About this event

A specialist guide will introduce you to the masons – Master, quarryman, banker and journeyman – who created the first fully Gothic cathedral in this country: their tools, training travels, specializations and the stone of course.

You will firstly discover the meaning of the renowned West Front. Then to inside, to see a selection of the masons’ superlative work, whether structural or decorative. For instance, the enigmatic stiff-leaf capitals (Pevsner: “The best place in England [or elsewhere?] to study and enjoy ...”), headstops present or (missing?), corbels, roundels, piers, shafts, delicate frills, oddities – and the mysterious green men.

You may even glimpse the allied trades of carpenter. mortar-maker and blacksmith.

Where to meet your guide

Check in at the Welcome Desk in the New Entry Cloister. A few minutes before your tour start time a Guide will meet you and take you to the tour start point.

No, if you have the booking confirmation on your phone you can show it at the Welcome Desk on arrival, or give your name when registering.
