About this event

  • Event lasts 1 hour 15 minutes

As many as 200,000 people in the UK may be at risk of discrimination due to their perceived 'caste'. But unlike discrimination based on race, sex, sexuality or religion or belief, caste discrimination is not explicitly prohibited in UK law.

In this event, a panel of experts and campaigners against caste discrimination will explain what caste is, how caste discrimination and prejudice affect the lives of people in the UK, and why laws against caste discrimination have faced barriers from some religious groups. This event will also explore how we can work to end the very concept of 'caste'.

Speakers:

  • Santosh Dass MBE | Chair, Anti Caste Discrimination Alliance
  • Dr Elizabeth Joy | Director, Dalit Solidarity Network UK
  • Sat Pal Muman | Chair, Caste Watch UK
  • Sahdaish Pall Bem | Chief Executive Officer, Sikh Women's Aid

There will also be a representative from Leicester Secular Society on the panel and a video message from Meena Varma, Executive Director of the International Dalit Solidarity Network.

This event is being held in collaboration with Leicester Secular Society. Tickets are £5 for non-members, free for members of National Secular Society and Leicester Secular Society.
