Description

The evening will begin at 6.15 with a screening of Josef von Sternberg’s classic Pre-Code Morocco (1930), starring Gary Cooper and Marlene Dietrich. This will be followed at 8pm by an informal discussion between Professor Laura Mulvey and Catherine Story that explores their common interests ranging from lighting design to love, obsession and death in early Hollywood films.

Morocco is 1 hour and 32 minutes.

Laura Mulvey (UK, 1941) is Professor of Film and Media Studies at Birkbeck, University of London. Her work includes Visual and Other Pleasures (Macmillan 1989; 2nd edition 2009), Citizen Kane (Macmillan, 1992; 2nd edition 2013), Fetishism and Curiosity (BFI, 1996) and Death Twenty-four Times a Second: Stillness and the Moving Image (Reaktion Books, 2006). As a filmmaker, she made six films with Peter Wollen including Penthesilea (1974) and Riddles of the Sphinx (1977).
