Event description
CAUGHT IN THE MIDDLE: Educational responsibilities, dilemmas and opportunities presented by YS4C and the ‘climate emergency’

About this Event

SEMINAR STYLE TRAINING FOR SCHOOL LEADERS AND GOVERNORS

“This was an impressive seminar on the most important issue we all face.” Mark McKelvie, Principal, Pudsey Grangefield

“The most important few hours I’ve spent as a teacher, in fact as a person. I feel empowered, positive and hopeful.” Pip Lark, Vice Principal, Farnley Academy

“A great way to meet people who share concerns about the planet, want to inspire and motivate young people, but recognise the constraints we sometimes encounter in school.” Kay Brown, Chaplain, Abbey Grange C/E Academy

----------------------------------------------------------------

School leaders find themselves caught between the valid concerns of students exercising their civil rights on the one hand, and the inadequate global political response to the challenge of climate change on the other.

Leeds City Council has declared a climate emergency, and is setting out plans to radically decarbonise the whole city. What does all this mean for schools? What is meant by “climate emergency”? What is the role of schools in a climate emergency?

* Keynote address and Q&A - Prof Andy Gouldson, Professor of Environmental Policy & Chair, Leeds Climate Commission: ‘Why is it a ‘Climate Emergency’ and what can we do about it?’

* Talk and workshop - Matt Carmichael, Leeds Climate Commission and teacher: ‘Education in a climate emergency’

* ‘Elevator pitches’ from organisations offering services covering energy savings, educational experiences and staff training.

-----------------------------------------------------------------
