Event description

Description

You have heard people sometimes confront a correlation between two variables and say “correlation is not causality!” But that is only half the story. Progress over the 150 years has shown that under certain conditions, correlation is causality. The purpose of this workshop is to introduce the student to the contemporary theory and practice of causal inference in the social sciences. Topics will include fundamental philosophical causality concepts drawn from the potential outcomes framework and the directed acyclical graphical framework. Practices include randomization inference, instrumental variables, differences-in-differences, synthetic control and regression discontinuity. There will be R and Stata programs made available so that students can follow along.

Prof. Scott Cunningham of Baylor University (http://scunning.com/) is giving a FREE two-day workshop on causal inference, what it is, how to do it and why it matters. Scott is an economist with interests in crime and risky behaviour. He also wrote a fantastic and freely available Econometrics text book called "Causal Inference: The Mix Tape". Topics to be covered in the workshop include potential outcomes, randomization inference, Directed acyclical graphical modeling, Instrumental variable estimation, Differences-in-differences, Synthetic controls and Regression discontinuity. Scott uses a very applied approach to teaching and there will be lots of examples to work through with data.

The workshp will be on 29 and 30 October 2019. The schedule is as follows:
