CAUSES OF ANGER PROBLEMS, COMPLEX PTSD, VIOLENT BEHAVIOUR
Helping children and young people heal
“Those children who are beaten will in turn give beatings. Those who are intimidated will be intimidating, those who are humiliated will humiliate. Those whose souls are murdered will murder.” (Alice Miller 1987, psychologist)
From major advances in brain science and psychology, we now know so much about why people grow up to be locked in anger and/or violence and why, in contrast, other people grow up to be kind, emotionally regulated and compassionate to others. So, this presentation is informed by fascinating, eye-opening research including brain scans of impulsive murderers, what witnessing or receiving verbal/physical violence does to the child’s developing brain, the neuroscience of why hurt people hurt people, and the psychology of the compulsion to repeat the cruelty you’ve known and the anti-aggression neurochemicals that lie dormant in the brains of perpetually angry people and how to awaken them.
Most importantly, Dr Sunderland will discuss amazing international programmes that have successfully worked therapeutically with very hurt people who go on to be very violent. As a result, they do not re-offend and move from cruelty to compassion for self and others. Moreover, she will discuss prevention and focus on what schools, services and communities can do to enable hurt-to-violence young people to make that vital shift from being distress excited to distress averse (the latter meaning you are moved to help those in pain).
