Cavendish Science Festival 2019: Seeing With Atoms

Imaging is the key to discovery in science and yet conventional microscopes can damage delicate materials and devices, altering the very structures they are trying to see. A new type of microscope, which uses beams of helium, overcomes this problem enabling non-damaging imaging and so opens a new window on science. This talk will explain the importance of microscopy in science and describes how these scanning helium microscopes are revolutionising the imaging of delicate materials such as biological samples.

Prof Paul Dastoor is a Leverhulme Visiting Professor at the University of Cambridge, Professor in Physics in the School of Mathematical and Physical Sciences at the University of Newcastle, Australia, and the director of the Centre for Organic Electronics at the University of Newcastle, Australia.
