Description

Why is change said to be missing in Einstein's General Relativity in the 'canonical' form best suited to merge with quantum mechanics? One question is: what are the ways that we can re-describe the world without telling a fundamentally different story? Another is: what are we able to observe? Thinking clearly and carefully about these two questions uncovers the missing change, giving an example of how science and philosophy can work together to understand the world.

Dr Brian Pitts is a Senior Research Associate in Philosophy at the University of Cambridge.
