Event description

Description

This workshop facilitated by Dr. Sidrah Muntaha will be offered as part of the British Association of Music Therapy conference and will draw on a preliminary model of Music-Formulation based CBT (Muntaha, in press) to present the findings from a cultural music & CBT group intervention for South Asian Women. This group intervention consisted of nine women referred by social workers, link workers and who self referred for Anxiety & Depression.

  • Two popular songs (Hindi Bollywood & Bangladeshi folk) were selected to introduce the CBT model by highlighting how positively framed song formulations and appraisal of the artistes' experienceses could be used to elicit a positive effect on their thoughts, feelings and behaviour.
  • The group involved both practical vocal exercises as well as learning correct breathing techniques based on Behavioural Psychology and Raga Therapy.
  • This non-stigmatising approach was used to develop insight into womens' own thought processes and creating an opportunity for discussing how their own negative appraisals of live events/personal experiences have impacted on their own mental health.
  • The group included developing strategies to cope with Anxiety and Depression such as using breathing exercises at home, developing a music group in their own organisation and identifying forums in their own communities where they can access mental health support.
  • This workshop will give delegates an opportunity to learn about this approach, but also to sing specific Indian notes using breathing techniques used in Indian Raga and Behavioural Models of Psychology, which promote muscle relaxation and help reduce stress and Anxiety. Delegates will be given an opportunity to formulate a song using the CBT-Music Formulation Approach and consider wider application of this model to other client groups such as Older Adults, Learning Disabilities and Children & Young People.
