CCF Oliver Rackham Memorial Guided Walk Spring 2017
Thu 13 April 2017, 17:00 – 18:30 BST
Hayley Wood is famous for its spring carpet of rare oxlips, abundance of bluebells and wood anemones and other less showy ancient woodland species. It is designated as a site of special scientific interest and managed by the Wildlife Trust for Cambridgeshire, Bedfordshire and Northamptonshire.
We have been privileged over past years to be joined on our CCF working parties in Hayley Wood by world renowned ancient woodland expert Professor Oliver Rackham. In 2015 on the weekend before he died, Oliver had agreed once again to lead the annual CCF guided walk in Hayley Wood where we see the results of our coppicing work and the amazingly beautiful spring flowers.
The condition of wood itself is one of Oliver's very many legacies after he reintroduced the ancient woodland practice of coppicing there over 50 years ago. Following the first Oliver Rackham memorial walk last year, we are going to continue to hold our annual guided tour as a memorial walk where everyone can hear about the management of the wood and see the flowers.
Our expert guides Richard Dowsett and Louise Bacon will lead the walk and will be inviting everyone who would like to do so to share their memories of Oliver either informally with each other or with the whole group as we walk around the wood.
Everyone is welcome to come along whether you've been on our working parties or not and whether you know the wood really well or this will be your first visit.
We hope to offer lifts from Cambridge, meeting at UNEP-WCMC just off Huntingdon Road at 4.20pm or at Hayley Wood at 5pm. You can drive down the track to the edge of the wood as Richard will take the padlock off the barrier so it should just lift out (and please put it back).
Please book a ticket (free) so we can gauge numbers for the walk and to ensure we have enough cars to offer lifts. If you are offering lifts please indicate by booking a ticket with the number of spaces you have free.
If you have any questions, do get in touch and I look forward to seeing many of you on the walk
