Description

Voices of Resistance: Subjugated Knowledge and the Challenge to the Criminal Justice System

This postgraduate conference will explore how the marginalised knowledge of those who have direct contact with the criminal justice and state welfare systems - prisoners, survivors of sexual violence, minority ethnic groups, victims, young people, welfare recipients to name a few - provide competing, alternative narratives to the dominant discourses articulated by the state, mass media and the criminal justice/industrial complex. The conference will also explore the political, policy and practical implications that including these narratives will have not only for challenging the current, exclusionary policies and practices pursued within the criminal justice and welfare systems but also for the development of an alternative set of policies and practices based on social inclusion and democratic accountability.
