Description

In histories of science, technology and medicine, essential questions must be investigated related to the nature of expertise and the circulation of knowledge. The one-day workshop aids researchers by addressing new intellectual, practical and methodological perspectives on science communication in its historical and historiographical context.

The event includes two talks. Dr. James Sumner, Senior Lecturer in HSTM at University of Manchester, will present some theoretical and pragmatic issues related to science communication, and Sarah Baines, Curator of Engineering at Museum for Science and Industry, will address the significance of science communication to museums, historic collections and public spaces. A roundtable discussion will provide participants with an opportunity to present and discuss the potential relevance of science communication in their own research and reflect on how they might contribute to existing scholarship. The day will finish with a tour of the museum.

The workshop is open to any CDP student with an interest in science communication, and is especially useful for those attending the BSHS Postgraduate Conference taking place at the University of Manchester on 4th – 6th April.

Only travel will be reimbursed for this event up to £50, only CDP students can claim for travel. You will have to book your own hotel. We suggest the two Ibis hotels mentioned below.

If you are going to the BSHS Postgraduate Conference, please book your hotel by ringing the hotel directly (0161 272 5000 for Ibis Princess Street or 0161 619 9000 for Ibis 96 Portland Street) to ensure that you get the discounted accomodation for the 4th & 5th of April.
