A lot has changed in the production and perception of music videos in the last 3 decades. Not only the distribution channels but also the technical facilities and budgets are different today. Nevertheless, the visual represenation of the musicians output hasn´t lost its relevance and is still a key factor for building an artist profile, not only for marketing purposes. On february 13th, CDR Berlin will discuss the past, present and possible future of the music video with some directors that have been in the game for many years and worked with prolific artitsts such as Bon Iver, Deichkind, Rammstein a.o. What rhole does the music video play today? How can a music video make an artist? What are important facts in the production process? Advice for young artists with a small budget? - Those are possible questions that get an answer on february 13th at Prince Charles Berlin.
In the second workshop artist Carsten Nicolai aka ALVA NOTO will shed some light on his diverse projects and how he implements visuals in his creative output. Nicolai seeks to overcome a separation of art forms and genres for an integrated artistic approach. Influenced by scientific reference systems, he often engages mathematic patterns such as grids and codes, as well as error, random and self-organising structures. After his participation in exhibitions like "documenta x" and the "49th and 50th venice biennial", Nicolai's works were shown in various international museums. Under the pseudonym Noto he experiments with sound to create his own code of signs, acoustic and visual symbols. As Alva Noto he leads those experiments into the field of electronic music. Besides performing in club and concert halls, Nicolai presented his audio-visual pieces at museums like Solomon R. Guggenheim museum in New York, Centre Pompidou in Paris or Tate Modern in London. Additionally he pursues projects with diverse artists such as Ryuichi Sakamoto or Blixa Bargeld a.o.
Every music producer knows the score: one can tinker away on a track for all eternity but it lacks something vital, and one still doesn't know what. Is the sound right? Does the arrangement work? How will the tune work on the dance floor? What will my buddies think of it? When is the track really complete? These are the questions to be answered at CDR. The aim of the event is not simply to give a straight lecture but to swap experiences in an open discussion with all participants. A subsequent clubnight with previously submitted tracks will continue after the workshops. Upload your own tracks to our Soundcloud dropbox and you'll get to hear them later over the Prince Charles soundsystem when CDR residents DJs Dirk Rumpff, John B. Savary and Tony Nwachukwu pull them together in a DJ set. The respective artists' names will be displayed, if so wished, so as to facilitate immediate feedback.
