About the Session

As Windows 10 reaches end-of-life in October, many Windows users are considering switching to a desktop Linux distribution in order to continue their computing life without having to deal with any Windows 11 shenanigans. Many of them are also trying to salvage perfectly working devices that are blocked from running Windows 11 due to its increased hardware requirements. The trouble is, a lot of the software that people use for their work and play only runs on Windows. Are you in that position or are otherwise considering an as-seamless-as-possible switch to Linux? Then this talk might just be for you!

As well as an overview on Virtual Machines, you’ll learn all about Wine and Proton, two compatibility layers for running Windows applications and games on Linux, with some demonstrations, as well as a discussion on drawbacks and general advice on making the switch. There’ll be a number of chances for discussions and questions as well, so that you can feel comfortable in knowing what’s out there for you as a soon-to-be-ex-Windows-user!

If nothing else, this talk will show you that switching to Linux may well be a possibility and that options are there for running the software you want to run on Linux!

You’ll have the chance to look into:

1. OS Survey

2. Windows 10 EOL

3. Virtual Machines Overview

4. Intro to Wine

5. Examples

6. Intro to Proton

7. Examples

8. Utilities for Managing Wine and Proton

9. Drawbacks

10. Tips for Switching (and when not to switch)

No previous experience needed with linux, just come with an open mind to learning about a new operating system on your computer system.
