Women working and managing internationally: Reviewing organisational, individual and national issues contributing to continuing gender segregation in global workplaces

Professor Kate Hutchings, Griffith Business School, Griffith University, Australia

The international gender gap in women’s employment and career progression, arising from factors including gender discrimination, horizontal and vertical segregation, and work/family conflict, is evident within countries and is also reflected in women’s opportunities to expatriate to work in, and manage, organisations across countries. In this presentation, Professor Hutchings will examine the current state of the global gender gap, and analyse gender segregation theory as it relates to the extant research highlighting organisational, individual and national socio-cultural barriers to women working in international management. In discussing her own stream of research in this area, which has specifically examined women from, and working in, the Asia-Pacific and Middle East regions, she will explore issues associated with the continuing under-representation of women in international management and consider challenges and issues for women in particular occupations and industries/sectors. The presentation will conclude with highlighting some areas for future research on women working internationally.
