Join us for a one-day science communication workshop, designed to equip ECRs across all subject groups in the CEC with practical skills and confidence to communicate their research effectively across a range of platforms and audiences. Strong communication skills are increasingly essential for research impact, securing external funding, public engagement, and career development, particularly at the early career stage.
The morning session will feature short talks 2 invited speakers - Steve Simpson (University of Bristol) and Alex Morrison (Univeristy Press officer), each with a different science communication focus. In the afternoon, participants will choose a practical breakout session aligned to their interests: an academic-style 3-minute thesis pitch, a press/media pitch, or a social media communication challenge. During this time, students will practice communicating their work with CEC ECRs from different departments. The day will culminate in a relaxed, friendly showcase session where attendees present their pitch versions and receive constructive feedback.
This is a free event funded by the CEC research workshop/networking funding call. Lunch will be provided!
Our speakers are:
Steve Simpson (Univeristy of Bristol): A science communicator who works across academic, media, and public-facing channels. Steves involvement with the Science Communication MSc program at Bristol will offer CEC ECRs a true insight into a variety of multi-media communication techniques. Find out more about Steve here.
Alex Morrison (Univeristy Press officer): Alex is the Climate and environment press officer for Exeter Univeristy and is responsible for the press releases of many CEC publications. He will provide insights on how to craft effective press releases and teach participants how to interact with the camera. ECRs will get the chance to practice mock interviews with Alex. See some of Alex's work here.
