Event description

Description

Important: numbers will be limited and we anticipate a significant demand for places so please book early. We are treating registrations as 'expressions of interest' and will confirm participation by 15th April.

About the Centre

The overall vision is to establish a world-leading centre of excellence in Environmental Data Science, building on the collective strengths of the two institutions, most notably the perfect synergy between academic and government/ national capability coupled by the existing intellectual leadership in both organisations in cross-disciplinary Environmental Science and data-driven science. Through this, we will embrace and develop a new kind of science in response to global challenges, which is data-driven and integrative. This is a bold and ambitious plan, which we intend will propel us into a position of international leadership in this area.

The scope of the work extends from novel methods of data acquisition through approaches to store ad process the resultant highly complex data sets, and new methods of making sense of this data, to support for decision making in the face of uncertainty. This is not just about deep learning for the environmental science but rather includes a wide range of emerging data science drawing on statistics and computer science including but not limited to extreme value theory, changepoints analysis, spatial statistics, machine learning, Bayesian statistics and emulation. We are particularly interested in how such statistical modelling can co-exist with process model understanding.

About the Event

Through this event, we seek to spread the message about the exciting work of CEEDS and to draw people in to contribute to our vision. More importantly, we want to kick-start the process of working together: this is not a ceremonially event; it is an opportunity to seek potential collaborations and ideas that can then be taken forward over the next few years. As such, the event will be designed to maximise opportunity for discussion and development of ideas.

This is particularly timely as there are many opportunities available for funding in this area including but not limited to the UKRI calls on the Constructing a Digital Environment, Climate Resilience, Clean Air and Landscape Decisions, as well as many related GCRF calls.

Who should attend?

This is a fundamentally trans-disciplinary initiative seeking innovation in data science methods and through this to also seek innovation in core areas of environmental science. As such, we extend an invitation to:

  1. Environmental scientists within both organisations that are interested in seeking new scientific insights through methodological breakthroughs and the resultant new kinds of science;
  2. Data scientists and computational experts from both organisations who seek methodological innovations and who are motivated by environmental challenges and working on some of the associated grand challenges of our time;
  3. And the curious who are excited by our vision and want to know more and participate in the work of the centre.
