Event description

Description

Come along to celebrate the 50th anniversay of People & Planet and our predecessor, Third World First

It's been 50 years of students taking action for global justice, and we think that's an occassion worth marking! So we've planning a day of celebrating our successes with talks from people that were involved in Third Word First and People & Planet through the years. They'll also be a vegan buffet, a ceilidh band, and lots of opportunities to get back together with long lost friends!

Quick History

In 1969 a group of Oxford University students started Third World First, collecting money from students to support Oxfam's work in overseas development. Since those humble beginnings, the movement grew to more universities and to become a campaigning organisation in its own right.

We had our first campaign victory in 1997 when we persuaded Pepsi to pull out of Burma, then under military control and one of the worst human rights abusers in the world. The head of PepsiCo described the campaign as "a right pain in the arse" - something that we're still proud of today.

In 1998 we renamed ourselves as People & Planet to move away from the somewhat out dated concept of the "third world" and to include an environmental dimension to our work as people are fundamentally reliant on the planet on which we live.

Fast forward through the Noughties - when we campaigned on access to HIV and AIDS medicines, for trade justice, against the privatisation of education and much more - and we get the the 2010s. For most of this time we've focused on tackling the climate crisis, defending workers' right and, most recently, campaigning for migration justice in the UK. Our current campaigns are:

And we also publish the Universities League - the only comprehensive and independent league table of UK universities ranked by environmental and ethical performance.

There's lots more about our history here, and they'll be even more at the celebration event.
