About this event

Community • Historic

To commemorate 200 years of the modern railway, we are running a series of station tours to celebrate rail’s remarkable past, its role today and its importance for a sustainable future. This immersive walking tour of Victoria’s historic station and the surrounding areas will be led by Network Rail and celebrated historian and author Rachel Kolksy.

Gateway to the Continent: Victoria

Two stations built side by side for different companies, eventually merged in the 1920s and for many people Victoria was from where they embarked on their first continental journey using the Night Ferry to France. There was glamour with the Orient Express travelling across Europe and the Imperial Airways Terminal put Victoria on map for air travel too. Intertwined are stories linked to WWI, beloved books and films, a luxury hotel and your guide Rachel’s own travel memories

We are committed to making our station tours as inclusive and accessible as possible.

Below are key details about the accessibility features available at the stations we'll be visiting:

  • Wheelchair Accessibility: All three stations (Waterloo, Victoria, and London Bridge) are wheelchair accessible, with step-free access to platforms and lifts where necessary.
  • Lifts and Ramps: Lifts are available for access between platforms and main station areas, and there are ramps for those with limited mobility.
  • Quiet Vox for Hearing: To ensure that the tour is accessible to all, we will have Quiet Vox devices available for all tour attendees, these devices amplify the tour guide's voice.
  • Seating and Rest Areas: Please note the station tour is a 2 hour walking tour. However there are seating areas are available throughout the stations for those who may need a break during the tour.
