About this event

Community • Historic

Due to popular demand we continue to commemorate 200 years of the modern railway, we are running a series of station tours to celebrate rail’s remarkable past, its role today and its importance for a sustainable future. This immersive walking tour of Waterloo’s historic station and the surrounding areas will be led by Network Rail and celebrated historian and author Rachel Kolksy.

Wonderful Waterloo Tour:

Opened in 1848 and once described as being for 'a better class of commuter’ this tour in and around Waterloo Station reveals the stories behind not one but seven stations and from one, The Station of the Dead, there were no return journeys! Discover links to the past including the station’s role during two World Wars, artwork from the 1951 Festival of Britain, luxury restaurants, contemporary public art and numerous cinematic associations including a news cinema, TV lounge and iconic film locations.

We are committed to making our station tours as inclusive and accessible as possible. Below are key details about the accessibility features available at the stations we'll be visiting:

  • Wheelchair Accessibility: All three stations (Waterloo, Victoria, and London Bridge) are wheelchair accessible, with step-free access to platforms and lifts where necessary.
  • Lifts and Ramps: Lifts are available for access between platforms and main station areas, and there are ramps for those with limited mobility.
  • Quiet Vox for Hearing: To ensure that the tour is accessible to all, we will have Quiet Vox devices available for all tour attendees, these devices amplify the tour guide's voice.
  • Seating and Rest Areas: Please note the station tour is a 2 hour walking tour. However there are seating areas are available throughout the stations for those who may need a break during the tour.
