Event description

Description

ChooseYouth the national campaigning organisation representing all of the main youth and youth service organisations, is organising a drop in evening for MPs and Lords on Monday November 6th, 2016, between 4 and 6.00pm.

This is one of many thousands of activities supporting the National Youth Agency's Youth Work Week and the event is hosted by Cat Smith MP.

ChooseYouth is inviting youth groups and youth workers and other professionals with an interest in ensuring young people have access to quality youth services to be part of the event to inform MPs and Lords of this vital work.

ChooseYouth Chair Doug Nicholls, said:

"Despite the most acute difficulties that have faced any public service, there is a tremendous amount to celebrate in youth work today. It is proving still an indispensable way of working with young people who today frankly face worse issues than for a generation. Young people in their hundreds of thousands still rely very much on the support and informal education and guidance provided by JNC qualified youth workers. Negotiating the difficulties of unemployment, competitive education, mental health issues and all of those issues that confront young people more than ever needs the support of trained youth workers.

Our problem is that despite the importance of this work for young people who vote with their feet to be involved with it, the structures and funding of the youth service have all but disappeared and it is through a new a committed landscape of incoherent provision that such good work is taking place. We need to rebuild a new Youth Service. Chooseyouth has costed this and our manifesto contains the legislative and organisational mechanism to make this a reality. We will ensure that this becomes a priority issue in the next General Election as all surveys of young people want it to be.

We welcome genuinely concerned MPs and Lords to our forthcoming Parliamentary event, so that they can see for themselves the transformative power of the embers of the old youth service and the sparks of the new."
