Event description
Is history a thing of the past? - a panel discussion brought to you by the University of Edinburgh.

About this event

2019 marks the tercentenary of the appointment of Charles Mackie as the first professor of history at the University of Edinburgh.

To celebrate the anniversary, University academics and partners will host a panel discussion addressing the question, “Is history a thing of the past?” focusing on the value and purpose of studying history during this moment of profound political, social, and technological change around the world. The panel will feature:

  • Professor Joanne Freeman (Yale University)
  • Ms Abena Boakyewa-Ansah (Vanderbilt University)
  • Professor Ewen Cameron ( University of Edinburgh)
  • Professor Frank Cogliano (University of Edinburgh)
  • Dr Gayle Davis ( University of Edinburgh)

The panel will welcome questions and responses from the audience.

The Principal and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Edinburgh, Prof Peter Mathieson, will host a reception open to all guests following the Q&A session. The reception will include an 'in conversation' session between Prof Mathieson and Simon Fennell (University of Edinburgh History alumnus, donor and USA Development Trust board member).

Event timings:

  • 5.00-6.30pm - Panel Discussion
  • 6.30-7.00pm - Q&A
  • 7.00-8.30pm - Reception

Please note: there are two registration options - Panel discussion and reception OR Reception only. Please only register for one.
