Event description

Description

Please join the Authors' Club and Jacaranda Books for an evening of celebration and commemoration of the 70th anniversary of the arrival of the HMT Empire Windrush and the resilience, courage and achievements of an extraordinary generation that shaped contemporary Britain.

The popular, award-winning historian Stephen Bourne will present his new book, War to Windrush, a timely new account exploring the contribution of black women to Britain's diverse, multicultural history. Spanning the years from the start of World War II to the arrival of the Empire Windrush on 22 June 1948 and the birth of the NHS on 5 July 1948, this engaging and informative book, illustrated with stunning photos, many from the author's private collection, celebrates the contribution of black women to British society in a decade of major upheaval and social change.

The award-winning novelist Alex Wheatle MBE and the Man-Booker Prize longlisted author Yvette Edwards will read from their work to celebrate the impact of the Windrush generation on contemporary Britain.
