Description

Celebrating ILO standards: How does Britain compare?

Since 1919, the International Labour Organization (ILO) – part of the United Nations – has brought together 187 member states from across the world to develop labour standards, policies and programmes designed to promote decent work for all.

The International Labour Organization (ILO) – part of the United Nations – has set minimum standards for workers' rights for 187 member states since 1919. Despite ratifying the ILO's principles, the UK has come under repeat criticism for failing to live up to the standards it has vowed to honour, especially when it comes to trade union rights such as the right to strike.

Most recently, in 2016, the ILO warned the UK that the Trade Union Act 2016 was in breach of its international obligations by presenting barriers to the right to strike – a fundamental right, enshrined in the United Nations International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights since 1966.

As UN Special Rapporteur on the rights to freedom of peaceful assembly and of association, Maina Kiai, recently said: "The concentration of power in one sector – whether in the hands of government or business – inevitably leads to the erosion of democracy, and an increase in inequalities and marginalisation with all their attendant consequences. The right to strike is a check on this concentration of power."

At this conference, leading lawyers, academics and trade unionists will guide delegates through the labour standards set out by the ILO and discuss where the UK meets its obligations and where it falls short.
