Event description

Description

A prominent Bengali community activist of East End Syeda Sultana Sikha is celebrating this traditional and colourful festival on the actual day of Bengali New Year - with a group of progressive friends since 2006.

This is a two-day festival that starts at Poplar Union in East London on 14 April and end up at Rich Mix on 15 April 2018. The celebration involves colourful rituals, dazzling dance, traditional Bangla music and poetry.

Curated by the poet and the director of Saudha, T M Ahmed Kaysher, the session at Rich Mix features a hypnotic, serene session of Indian classical music and Bengali light music by the finest North-Indian classical vocalist in Europe Chandra Chakraborty and a haunting session of Carnatic violin recital by one of the leading Carnatic violinists in UK Balu Raghuraman. The celebration also includes Bengali poetry reading with English translation by a few well-known poets.

The event is supported by London Borough of Tower Hamlets Council.
