Event description
From observation to abstraction: Create your own style.

About this Event

The Course

This course will give you the opportunity to develop a sense of what is important to you as a visual artist, what materials and tools work best for you, thus creating your own unique style in your painting practice. You will learn how to draw an object (or draw from a photograph) from observation, simplify and break it down into the visual elements which create your own style of Abstract painting. It is a delicate balance of keeping certain visual elements and completely letting go at the same time! There is nothing more exciting! BEFORE the class starts you need to choose an OBJECT or a PHOTOGRAPH you would like to work from.

Celia is also running this course online for those who cannot attend MAC. This is not a MAC course and payment details are at the foot of the page. This course runs on Tuesdays from 10am to 12.30pm

OBJECTS - It can be a house plant (succulents are nice and small with good shapes to draw) or a natural object such as fruit or vegetables, a seed pod, a flower, a feather, bones, a crystal etc. It is always better to choose an object that you have a connection with (that you love) because you will be working with it for 10 weeks. Also limit yourself to 1 or 2 small objects. This can change as you start the course.

PHOTOGRAPH - This can be of a favourite person, (Portrait) or a group of people, a favourite building, or a favourite landscape.

Make sure the photograph is big enough, nice and clear with good contrasts of light and dark and you are able to use it to copy and for your reference.

N.B You will need to bring your chosen objects or photograph to the first class of the course so please have it ready. Thank you!

In the first few weeks of the course, we will be drawing your subject either as a ‘Still Life’ or drawing from your chosen photograph (copying it).

We will be making quick thumbnail sketches and exploring the fundamental components of the visual language: composition, tonal values, line, movement, texture, and colour. For these initial studies we will work on cartridge paper and use drawing materials such as pencils, rubbers, charcoal, inks, coloured chalk pastels and oil pastels.

By week 3, we will start to use paint and simplify the image.

In week 4, we will use line and white acrylic paint to overlay the image, simplifying and transforming it into more abstraction.

Week 6 – 10 we will start a series of 4 paintings on hard board panels (2 x size A3 and 2 x size A2) which we will keep reworking and developing abstractly, students can also try a bigger sized paper (A1) if they wish.

On these panels we will use a mixture of drawing materials such as felt pens, oil pastels, as well as acrylic paint. We will also paint with brushes and experiment with other tools such as a small trowel, old credit cards, modelling paste and sandpaper etc.

Throughout the course there will be plenty of time for group peer review sessions and plenty of feedback from the tutor.

There will also be an opportunity to show your work to the public, friends and family, at the end of the course.

All necessary materials will be provided and light lunches and refreshments will be available. Please notify us at time of booking if you have any dietary requirements.

This course will not run on Friday 12th March and the online course will not run on Tuesday 9th March.
