About this event

Arts • Orchestra

Renowned international cellist Tapan Mullick, known for his innovative “Cevolin” technique -

- a fusion of cello and violin playing, pushes the boundaries of traditional string

performance. He explores the theme of freedom in India clustered as DeshBhakti Geet

drawn from traditional composers like Muhammad Iqbal, Pitambar Das, Kazi Nazrul Islam,

Rabindranath Tagore and other modern renditions.

In collaboration with Arnab Datta (lead singer and guitarist) of the band Compound Radius

UK, Mullick presents a compelling dialogue between cello and guitar through diverse folk

traditions, blending contrasting melodic styles and aesthetics into a unified soundscape

ranging from Scotland to the mystical Himalayas.

Rooted in the timeless romance of Bollywood music and the iconic vocals of legends like

Kishore Kumar and Mohammed Rafi, Mullick’s cello evokes nostalgia and memory

interwoven with the musical and cultural narratives at play, introduced by Dr Sanjukta

Ghosh (SOAS).

Tapan Mullick currently serves as the Principal Performer at The Oberoi, New Delhi, where

he brings his signature blend of Indian and Western classical styles to a discerning

audience. A former principal cellist with the Delhi Symphony Orchestra, Tapan has

collaborated with Rabbi Shergill and Abida Parveen, and contributed to the soundtracks of

films like Black Friday and Tashan; Insurrections Ensemble, an Indo–South African musical

initiative; Rendition of Torrent of the Indian Ocean band widely recognised as the pioneers

of the fusion rock genre in India.
