Some Reviews from the Angels’ past concerts…
“Thanks so much for the wonderful concert – the sounds and vitality, invention and delight, stayed with me during the night.”
Venetia
“What a lovely programme, we really enjoyed the performance, the venue and the three of you playing together. It was fun, serious, moving and with enough humour to bring a smile and a bounce to all those around us at least.”
Jack & Amanda
“That was a glorious concert, thank you! Wonderful playing and such fascinating pieces put together in an amazing programme, a real journey!”
Caroline
“Thank you for a heart-lift of a Sunday afternoon last week. The whole thing was fabulous. Your arrangements were just brilliant, the performances outstanding and I found the musical communication and conversation of the ensemble work very moving. Three cellos ought to happen more often.”
Helen
“I wanted to thank you and your fellow performers for such a wonderful concert….it was utterly mesmerising, moving and such good fun to be in the audience. I heard three cellos play so many different instruments, from so many places….I could not quite believe it. I just wanted to hear and see it all again at the end. Thank you thank you and please pass on the message to the other musicians.”
Lucy and Jean
“May I follow up just to say that we had a wonderfully uplifting and heartening time. Three strong women making beautiful, exciting music from across so many repertoires.”
Robert
About the players:
Jane Fenton’s international career as a cellist was kicked-started while she was still a teenager, when she undertook tours to various European countries and to the USA with Simon Rattle and the London Schools Symphony Orchestra. She later went on to study with Stefan Popov and Raphael Wallfisch at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. While still a student, Jane worked closely with David Takeno in the foundation of the Guildhall String Ensemble, where she was principal cellist. The ensemble won the International Jeunesses Musicales Competition in Belgrade in 1982 and made its Carnegie Hall debut in 1991 during its first tour of the United States. (Jane’s performance at that concert earned her a commendation from the New York Times.) The ensemble recorded for RCA records, regularly broadcast for the BBC, and made appearances at concerts and major international music festivals throughout the world.
Jane has performed with the Chamber Orchestra of Europe, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Britten Sinfonia the Scottish Chamber Orchestra. She has played principal cello for the London Chamber Orchestra, the Scottish Ensemble, the Mozart Festival Orchestra and Ballet Rambert, and was principal cellist with Glyndebourne Touring Opera and Garsington Opera for many years.
Jane has recorded extensively with the Adderbury Ensemble and has been involved in sessions for the Harry Potter film series and for superstar pop diva Madonna.
Jacqueline Johnson graduated from the Victorian College of the Arts in Melbourne, Australia. During her studies there she took part in masterclasses with cellists Rohan de Saram, Anner Bylsma and Paul Tortelier. She was a finalist in the ABC Instrumental and Vocal Competition and performed the Dvorak Cello Concerto.
Jacqueline went on to become a full time member of the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, and later played with the Australian Opera and Ballet companies.
She broadcast and recorded recitals for the Australian Broadcasting Corporation and gave many solo and chamber recitals throughout Australia. Jacqueline also toured China and Hong Kong, where she gave recitals and masterclasses at the Conservatories in Xian and Tianjin, and at the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts.
On moving to the United Kingdom in 1990, Jacqueline undertook further study with Christopher Bunting, Colin Carr and Pedro de Alcantara, and has also had coaching from Steven Isserlis. She studied baroque cello with Anner Bylsma.
Now based in Oxford, Jacqueline works freelance, combining chamber music and solo performances with orchestral work and teaching.
She is also a member of the folk group, Moonrakers.
Jacqueline enjoys performing early music on her 18th century Italian baroque cello, in venues such as the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford. Recent concerto performances include Finzi, Elgar and Lalo Cello Concertos.
Kath Sharman, originally from New Zealand, won an Arts Council scholarship in 1983 to study in the UK and Europe with several teachers, including Tanya Prochazka, Jennifer Ward-Clarke and Steven Isserlis. Kath has since settled in King’s Sutton, Northamptonshire, and now enjoys a busy career performing as continuo player and chamber musician with a wide variety of groups.
Kath has performed and recorded as continuo cellist with many orchestras, including the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, the Gabrieli Consort and Players, the King’s Consort, the London Handel Orchestra and the Academy of Ancient Music. She has also been involved with concerts and recordings of many and diverse chamber music projects, including duos with fortepianist Geoffrey Govier, world music with Orbestra, viol consorts, jazz on upright and electric bass, and most recently a collaboration with renowned baroque dancer Mary Collins, exploring the Bach Cello Suites.
