Event description

Description

From war graves to well-known individuals, our graveyards can often provide a unique and surprising insight into our common heritage.

During this fascinating guided tour uncover local history and learn about the burial rituals of different religious groups. The tour may change subject to weather conditions.

We will visit Mallusk Cemetery where we talk about Jemmy Hope the United Irishman and Francis Joseph Bigger the antiquarian and historian (who owned the Crown and Shamrock pub at one stage). In Carnmoney Parish Cemetery we look at the burial ground of the McKinneys of Sentry Hill and General Smythe, uncle of Lilian Bland the aviator. We go to the Jewish cemetery where there are lots of interesting graves and a quick look at the Muslim plot in Carnmoney east. In Carnmoney we look at Alex Higgins (snooker world champion) and Lenny Murphy (the Shankill butcher) and the King of the Gypsies. In Our Lady’s Acre, we look at graves from the first and second world wars as well as the recent ‘troubles’. In Kilbride there is local author Florence Mary McDowell and a few others of local interest.

It’s not just the graves as we’ll do a bit of commentary as we drive around, talking about landmarks or characters as we pass them (Lilian Bland, the Longshot etc)

Bus will leave Antrim Civic Centre at 9.30am and pick up at Mossley Mill at 10am.
