Centenary Memorial of Walter Tull: A Role Model from Footballer to Officer

Saturday 24 March

1pm – Memorial service

1.30-3pm – Talks and refreshments

The Courtyard and Great Hall of The Guildhall

Join us in remembering Walter Tull, Northampton’s footballer and first black officer to lead white British soldiers in battle in WW1. A free memorial service will take place at the Walter Tull statue in the Guildhall courtyard. Ticketed talks and refreshments will then take place in the Great Hall.

Walter Tull’s story will be told by his biographer Phil Vasili. Dr Steven Bradbury, Lecturer in Young People and Sport at Loughborough University, will then deliver a talk entitled Racism in Football: Historical and Contemporary Issues. Finally, Tony Whelan, a current youth coach at Manchester United and a former player with Manchester United, Manchester City and Rochdale, will deliver the talk Walter Daniel Tull: Standing on the Shoulders of a Pioneering Giant.
