Event description

Description

Central Hill Estate was designed by Rosemary Stjernstedt and the Lambeth Borough Architects headed by Ted Hollamby. Completed in 1975, the award-winning Estate was landscaped around the existing trees and natural contours, providing spectacular views of Central London from its elevated position as well as creating open spaces for its residents and green corridors for wildlife.

Like Cressingham Gardens, Central Hill is a perfect example of how Hollamby wanted to place 'people at the heart of his designs'. After becoming Borough Architect for Lambeth in 1963, he persuaded Stjernstedt to lead the design team for Central Hill after her pioneering role as Group Leader for the Alton East Estate in Roehampton. Her achievements led to her to being made the first woman architect to be accredited Grade I from the London County Council.

Under Stjernstedt, Central Hill was designed using a successful Scandinavian and Humanist approach to Modern Architecture, Planning and Landscape. Unfortunately, it is now one of the Six Estates in Lambeth threatened with complete demolition and top-down regeneration. The residents were therefore left with no options but to set up the Save Central Hill campaign which worked with Architects for Social Housing on an alternative 'Peoples Plan' to save their Community, prevent their Estate from being demolished and regenerated into another montonous, gated luxury development marketed to foreign investors.

Guided walks with Central Hill Residents and ASH will start in the 'Bowl' on Bankside Way in the middle of the Estate at 11am and then at 3pm, with an opportunity to talk to local Central Hill residents about the current situation, see an exhibition of ASH's People's Plan and a talk at 1pm.

Please follow the posters to the exhibition or ask the Open House volunteers. Tickets are free, donations towards the Save Central Hill Campaign can be made through the Just Giving Crowdfunding site here.

Speakers to be confirmed closer to the date!
