Event description

The Centre for Personalisation is interested in personalisation of education in all forms and possibilities. Our focus on personalisation brings us to take a critical stance against rigid mass schooling systems whilst acknowledging and celebrating settings / projects / innovations where more open, self-directed, democratic and flexible approaches are employed.

In 2019 we will have been active for some 31 years. A very, very brief teaser / taster …
• Some 132 journals, magazines and special supplements
• Around 101 books – some translated into Polish, Japanese (Educational Heretics Press)
• Some 102 conferences and learning exchanges
• Influence on educational case law
• Continuous support for educational innovation and educational start ups
• Continuous support to families and learners seeking choice, personalisation and alternatives.
• Our current social media support networks reach over 17,000 people
• Support, signposting advice for learners / educational settings
• Continuous campaigning and engagement with politicians and educational bodies and settings
• Influence on educational narratives and ideas.
• Conducting research and influencing research agendas
• International links
• We continue to move forward and grow organically whilst seeking to network the networks.

Key language:
Personalised, invitational, flexible, self-managed, self-determination, co-created, independence, interdependence, democratic, cooperative, convivial.

One of our founders Professor Roland Meighan summed us up with some simple straplines

'Anybody, any age, anytime, anyplace, any pathway, any pace.'
'I did it my way – though often in cooperation with others.'
'Alternatives for everybody all of the time.'

Our objectives, principles and vision and activity are all detailed on our developing website and social media (see Quick Links on our home page) and our regular e-newsletters.

Our extensive priorities over the coming year fit the following broad headings

- Developing our twice annual journal, e-news, website and social media platforms

- Continuing to grow and engage with the wider networks (currently around 17k people… an increase of 4k over last year)

- Refreshing our network links, partnerships and collaborations working with other groups in the alternative education sectors.

- Flexischooling support and advice for schools, families and learners.

- Flexischooling Small Schools Campaign.

- Home-based education support and advice – families and learners

- Support for home-based education communities with challenges from government.

- Regionally focused Learning Exchanges

- Research

- Influencing the research agenda – supporting young / new researchers at all levels within the alternative / critical education spheres. Working with in Partnership with the Childhood Research Forum (Liverpool Hope University) and Phoenix Education. Developing the Light on Ed Research Network and an associated journal. Developing an archive of research in this area.

The work of Centre for Personalised Education is based on the freely given time and skills of a range of passionate and committed educators.

We have an amazing team of skilled and experienced trustees. This team is backed by a range volunteers and supporters and is underpinned by the subscriptions and donations we receive. The reality is we operate on a shoestring and this income is vital to enable us to set up our support systems and engage face to face with individual, groups and settings.

In everything we do we seek to be as inclusive and cost efficient as is possible and of course members access all our events for free.
