Introduction to making the vessel in clay
On this five week course held on Friday mornings from 10.30 - 1.30, run by Chris, we will explore two different clay making processes; slab building and wheel throwing. The focus will be on the functional pot for the kitchen and table. You will learn about preparing and using clay slabs at different stages to construct unique vessel forms. You will also learn the basics of wheelthrowing: from centering the clay to making a range of forms such as bowls and cups, and making and applying handles. Suitable for complete beginners, or those with a little prior experience who would like to focus more on their own projects.
We will also cover surface decoration and finishing techniques - slip decoration and glazing. Both of us at Cyan Clayworks use a variety of finishes in our work, and we will show you a survey of our methods. Apart from the techniques, we will also introduce some vocabulary that you may or may not be familiar with. This will be advantageous to you to understand more of what you are doing, and how to explain it to others.
Like all our courses, class sizes are small so that everyone gets enough individual support and advice. We will go through different practical demonstrations each week, and then you will be able to work on projects of your own design. All tools and materials provided.
£165 per person, inclusive of materials, preparation and firings.
