An introduction to wheelthrowing, slab building, tiles and surface decoration, suitable for beginners and those who would like a refresher.
About this event
This creative one day workshop will focus on a mix of approaches to working with clay, and will be run by both Fiona and Chris. Students will be introduced to throwing on the wheel. The first pots will be thrown with one to one support, then you will be able to practice on your own as required. We will be making handmade tiles, and decorating with coloured slips by painting and monprinting, and creating texture and pattern. We will also be constructing forms out of slabs of clay (a popular form of handbuilding), making vessels or more abstract forms. The slabs will be prepared for you in advance so at the right consistency. These can be decorated with slips too before the end of the workshop. Throughout the day you will be able to switch between the processes, and get a good sense of making things in clay and the timing needed for drying etc. Everything will be finished, fired and glazed for you ready to collect a few weeks later.
Cyan Clayworks is a working studio and non-profit educational space, part of the wider complex of Beaverhall Studios.
