Cetacean Soundworlds
Overview
This two-hour workshop explores the fascinating world of underwater acoustics, focusing on the sounds produced by cetaceans (whales and dolphins) as inspiration for music creation. Participants will begin by listening to a selection of underwater recordings, learning how these marine mammals communicate and navigate through sound. We will discuss the acoustic qualities of underwater environments and how these can translate into musical textures and structures. Through guided exercises, attendees will experiment using cetacean sounds to suggest rhythmic, melodic, or ambient elements to create short musical sketches inspired by the ocean’s hidden soundscape. Deepening understanding of both marine life and sound-based composition.
No previous experience is necessary. Please bring a notebook and something to write with.
