Event description
On the 30th anniversary of the UNCRC and the Children Act, join us for the CFAB 2019 Annual International Child Protection Lecture.

About this Event

Our keynote speakers this year are:

Nuale Mole (Founder and Senior Lawyer, AIRE Centre);

Martin Pratt (Deputy CEO, Camden Council);

Miglena Baldzhieva (ISS-Bulgaria);

Richard Morris (Senior Head of Service, CAFCASS).

The Children Act 1989 embodied a change in philosophy by making the child’s welfare the courts' paramount concern, moving away from the concept of parental rights towards the right of the child. The United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child put children's rights at the centre of the agenda for global peace. Thirty years later, and in the (presumed) aftermath of the UK exit from the EU, can we still claim this success?

The panel will illuminate debate on a number of topics including:

• Is best interest determination in conflict with cultural relativism?

• Is child protection better or worse off without the EU?

• What legal instruments should we be using to ensure permanency of placement abroad?

• Have immigration and family courts moved any closer together?

• What is the European view of British social work practice? Are there lessons we can learn?

Join us for a relaxed evening of thoughtful discussion with peers across the legal, judicial, social service, civil society and healthcare sectors. Drinks and networking will follow the debate.
