Event description

Description

Deal Pier is a bare bones structure built in the 1950s. It has a pared down, matter-of–fact quality where nothing is superfluous. It could be compared to the ribcage of a ship. The anglers, walkers and day-trippers come and go, bringing a dash of life and colour to the scene but you always sense that the structure will be swept clean and returned to the sea and the weather. This gives it a timeless quality. Its romance is closely linked to its ordinariness.’ - Níall McLaughlin Architects

Dover Arts Development invites you to come along to the final drawing workshop, led by artist Marcia Teusink, in the series of workshops especially commissioned for the #CHALKUP21 project. These workshops have been exploring a variety of approaches to drawing, from observation exercises to more exploratory approaches.

The sixth workshop will take place at the Deal Pier, exploring the building designed by Niall McLaughlin architects in 2008.

The sessions are aimed at trying to understand both formal and conceptual aspects of the nine buildings and public artworks of the CHALKUP21 Trail, as well as their relationship to their particular site. When we look at architecture, what do we see? And how do we see it in relation to its surroundings?

We will be meeting at the Deal Pier café at the end of the pier. The funding received for CHALKUP21 supports 20 workshop spaces, enabling the development of your own creative practice in a new environment. Booking is essential, please do let us know if you need to cancel so that we can give the place to someone else. All materials will be supplied and the event is suitable for all levels and abilities and participants should be prepared to draw in all types of weather.

After the workshop, we are hoping that workshop attendees will stay on for an architecture-focused book event at the Deal Pier café, from 5.30 - 7.30pm. Led by architect Charles Holland and featuring a talk from writer Travis Elborough, the event will mark the ninth and final bronze trail plaque installation along the trail. Each plaque marks one of the outstanding examples of twenty-first-century art or architecture that make up the CHALKUP21 trail. The plaques have been designed by Charles Holland.

Dover Arts Development’s CHALKUP21 project is a Coastal walking trail that aspires to raise awareness and appreciation of contemporary twenty-first-century coastal architecture along the Strait of Dover. Over the last 18 years, there have been some fine examples built along the Strait, many of which have received prestigious industry awards. CHALKUP21 links together nine of these examples into a 17-mile coastal walking trail between Folkestone and Deal.
