Challenges & Opportunities

of Leading a Cross Border Charity

Led by: James Jopling, Interim Director, Project Scotland

Are you involved in cross border working? As you will know, there are a number of advantages and disadvantages for leading a cross border charity, from keeping up-to-date with different laws & regulations, to juggling day-to-day experiences of cross border charity existence, and of course, the impact of the ever changing political environment in Scotland and the UK. Although these challenges are likely to have implications for both small and large third sector organisations working cross border, none of these problems are too big to overcome.

This roundtable discussion will be led by James Jopling, Interim Director, Project Scotland who has a wealth of experience in UK wide working, and will be reflecting on the challenges and opportunities of his cross border journey.

This event intends to explore:

  • some of the pros and cons of leading cross border organisations;
  • structure - how and where are staff in Scotland managed from;
  • connection with other UK nations & ways of work together;
  • governance challenges;
  • income generation: cross border funding and fundraising;
  • the ever changing political landscape and how to navigate this;
  • Innovation/growth/change.

This list is non-exhaustive and we hope for this event to be an open space to discuss the current issues, challenges, and opportunities that are affecting you as a cross border third sector leader.

This event is open to third sector leaders (members and non-members of ACOSVO) of Scottish voluntary organisations.

In March 2019, a small group of Scottish directors of UK charities met to discuss ‘the challenges and opportunities of leading a cross border charity’. Following this meeting, Martin Crewe, Director, Barnardo’s Scotland wrote a blog, pulling together all the main points explored on the day - please see here
