Challenging Behaviour: Distress Not Defiance

Challenging Behaviour: Distress Not Defiance

By HOPE For Autism

Overview

This new training session will be delivered by Kieran and Diane Wyse, our Autism Training Team.

Dysregulation can show up in many ways and is often misunderstood. It’s not about being difficult—it’s about someone struggling to cope with understanding what’s going on around or inside them. Things like busy environments, social pressure, differing social standards or unclear expectations can make it harder to stay regulated. For autistic people, this can be even more complex, with sensory differences, communication styles, and emotional processing all playing a part. That’s why it’s so important to look beyond the behaviour and ask what someone might need. With kind support, clear strategies, and a better understanding, we can help create safer, more accepting spaces for everyone.
