Friends Who Are Going
Event description

Description

The aim of this course is to consider how parents and carers can manage behaviour which may be violent and aggressive, but also includes rigid/obsessive behaviours and non-compliance. Sue Robson from our Sitting and Befriending Service and Sian Austin, Parent Support Worker, will be looking at strategies recommended by the Challenging Behaviour Foundation including the ABC and Traffic Lights approaches.

This course, which will be interactive and practical, covers:

What are behaviours/challenging behaviours
The types of challenging behaviour
The nature of the problem and solutions to be avoided
Why does it occur and what is it saying?
Promoting and managing non-challenging behaviours
Different approaches
Ways of being positive
Avoidance of ‘escalators’

We will be serving lunch and there will be an opportunity for carers to discuss behavioural problems they are struggling to manage and we will look into strategies that may be helpful.

Simone Siddell will also be sharing ideas on how to encourage your child to take part in family life, organise their time and their bedrooms! Simone is a qualified teacher who currently tutors children who are not in school due to emotional, behavioural and social issues. She works with looked after children and those on alternative provision programmes, helping them back into education. She has experience of working with children with ASC, ADHD, Dyspraxia, and PTSD. Simone is also an Open University Lecturer and teaches a range of adult students of all abilities, providing effective support to those with mental health issues.

Family Matters offers 1:1 support for parents and carers of children with extra needs. We can work with you to focus on areas of family life that are causing concern and identify steps to address them. We can provide information, support and advocacy services. If we can’t find an answer, we will find someone who can.

Family Matters run workshops and drop-in sessions at the Disability Action & Advice Centre, 4 Waldegrave Road Teddington TW11 8HT every 4th Tuesday of the month from 10am-1.0 except for school holidays. RUILS staff, including Sian Austin and Linda Campbell-Arthur from Family Matters, Alex Hardy from Independent Support & Sue Robson from the Sitting & Befriending service, are on hand to answer your questions.
