Description

What does it take to challenge harmful cultural practices within your own community? How are we able to share experience to develop the conversation around female activism and culture?

We are organising an event to welcome a special guest from Kenya - Mrs Hellen Nikuraiya, who will be joining us to share her postive work in eliminating Harmful Traditional Practices as a Maasai woman in Kenya. Hellen is a renowned activist for the rights of Kenyan girls, saving them from Forced Marriage and Female Circumision. She is comitted in changing the social norms of her village people, by educating them of the harm that some of the culture practices might cause for the Kenya girls. She provides a safe haven for girls that might be at risk and has also opened a school.

Our other speaker includes Zainab Nur, the Co-founder of Hayaat Women Trust, an African Disapora Womens Group, based in Cardiff. She has worked in the Public Sector as a Professional Social Worker for most of her career. In the last 5 years, she has given her time freely in advocating for peoples rights to entitlements to public services. She is passionate about women & girls rights and has a long history of being a community activist. She will be sharing the postive changes that has occured in challenging Female Circumcision in her community and the method that was used to make sure that the next generation of girls were saved.

Zainab will give a short presentation following Hellen's talk and Applied Drama faciliator Izzy Rabey (who has worked with both women) will facilate the audience to take part in a Q and A session, which will be followed by a panel discussion.
