Challenging Islamophobia in Sport & Society – An Evening with IRU & ISSE

Join us on Tuesday 14th October 2025 at the British Muslim Heritage Centre in Manchester for an inspiring and thought-provoking evening hosted by the Islamophobia Response Unit (IRU) and ISSE, a leading social enterprise.

This free event will shine a light on how to report Islamophobia and deal with Islamophobic hate crime/ discrimination which continues to affect communities in everyday life, as well as a focus on the world of sport. Through real case studies, expert insights, and lived experiences, we will explore how organisations and individuals can work together to challenge bias, increase accountability, and create fairer opportunities for all.

What to Expect:

  • Spotlight on the IRU: Learn about the UK’s only dedicated charity providing free legal guidance, representation, and support to victims of Islamophobic hate crime and discrimination in schools, workplaces, universities, and public life.
  • Insights from ISSE: Discover how ISSE supports intersectionally diverse and under-represented communities, helping individuals realise their full potential and driving social mobility across sectors.
  • Guest Speaker – Dr Ikram Butt: Former England Rugby League international and pioneering advocate for equality and inclusion in sport. Dr Butt has inspired generations and will share his experiences at the forefront of change.
  • Grassroots Voices: Hear directly from a grassroots cricket organisation about their lived experience of alleged Islamophobia within the Yorkshire Cricket Board (YCB) and England & Wales Cricket Board (ECB) a powerful live case study of ongoing challenges.
  • IRU Casework in Sport: Gain insights into IRU’s work with high-profile cases, including our ongoing challenges to systemic discrimination within national sporting bodies such as the FA.

Why Attend?

  • Be part of an honest, open conversation about discrimination, fairness, and accountability in sport and society.
