Event description

Description

Many Muslim women in Britain face a "triple penalty" impacting on their job prospects - being women, being from an ethnic minority and being Muslim.

‘Inspiring Aspirations’, the national employability project at Amina Muslim Women’s Resource Centre invites you to our ‘Challenging Perceptions - Breaking Barriers for Muslim Women In Scotland’ event. Building on the success and feedback from our first ever agency conference in 2017, this event promises thought provoking discussions, interactive workshops and impetus to generate change. Ideal for front-line staff, service providers, equalities champions and those seeking to make Scotland a fair and inclusive place to live and work.

The event will feature keynote speaker James Fergusson, award-winning journalist, author of Al-Britannia, My Country: A Journey Through Muslim Britain, discussing discrimination and the negative perceptions Muslim and minority ethnic women encounter both during the recruitment process and when in the workplace. Amina's Employability team will also be at the forefront, sharing their garnered expertise from their direct engagement with over 500 Muslim and Minority Ethnic women annually.

Delegates will have an opportunity to participate in one of two workshops;

1. An interactive drama based communications workshop delivered by freelance theatre artist Suzi Morrice.

2. A thought-provoking workshop delivered by Amina's own Vijiha Bashir and Fariha Saeed, exploring the Muslim community in Scotland and tips and techniques for building rapport with Muslim and minority ethnic women.

There will also be several opportunities to hear first hand from an array of local Muslim women sharing their own personal employability journeys.

This exciting event will bring together organisations, agencies and support services, along with Muslim women from the local community to explore;

  • The rich diversity of Scotland’s Muslim community.

  • The barriers experienced by Muslim women when seeking paid employment and income generation.

  • Examples of best practice in providing front-line service provision.

  • Future-proofing employability support.

Providing a platform for our clients to have their thoughts, ideas and feelings heard, ‘Challenging Perceptions’ promises a day of dialogue, insight and reflection.
