Event description
A unique opportunity for single parents to get together, share their experiences, celebrate their achievements and challenge stereotypes

About this Event

This event is inspired by interviews with single parents, which were carried out during University of Huddersfield research. Single parents who took part in the study commonly reported feeling a sense of isolation and stigmatisation. They also expressed extreme frustration about negative stereotypes, which fail to reflect the reality of their family lives.

The event is a chance for single parents to get together and challenge such stereotypes and celebrate single parent families. It offers a space to have fun, voice your opinions - and perhaps make some new friends in the process. It will be a safe and welcoming environment in which to meet other single parents whilst taking part in gentle, thought-provoking activities.

This half-day workshop offers a mix of brief presentations and activities focusing on:

  • sharing the ‘ups and downs’ of single parenting
  • tackling media myths
  • developing more positive messages about single parenthood.

We will work together to create a short film that challenges prejudice and celebrates single parenthood. If you wish to do so, you can contribute anonymous written messages to the video, which will be available for sharing with friends and family and on social media after the event.

  • Free tea/coffee/soft drinks and cake will be provided.
  • A free, staffed crèche will be available. Crèche booking is required as places are limited. To find out more about the crèche staff and facilities and to book a place, please email: n.carroll@hud.ac.uk or phone/text: 07740921081.
