Event description

Description

Chameleon Youth is a new youth dance company for Manchester, set up in 2016 by Company Chameleon. This provides an incredible opportunity to develop as a young dance artist by:

  • Developing your dance skills through an exceptional programme of classes
  • Understanding the workings of a professional dance theatre company
  • Learning about producing professional dance theatre for the stage
  • Taking part in a wide range of performance opportunities

What are we looking for?

Young people aged 11 – 18 with raw dance talent! Which is essentially that special spark in someone who has a positive attitude, loads of enthusiasm, is willing to try out new things, and not afraid to explore their creative ideas. Therefore, dance training and experience is by no means essential.

How many people are we looking for?

We hope to recruit dancers to our Juniors group, roughly age 11 – 14, and our Seniors group, roughly age 15 – 18. There will be a maximum of 25 in each group. We’ll consider each dancers training needs before placing them into a group, meaning age ranges in the Juniors and Seniors may vary slightly to those given above.

What’s the commitment?

If selected at the try-out in July, Chameleon Youth dancers will commit to being a part of the company for one year. This will start in September and run to July. Each group will meet on a Monday evening during term time at Manchester Central Library: usually Juniors 5 – 6.30pm and Seniors 6.30 – 8pm. In addition, there will be up to three intensives organised per year, which will take place at weekends or in school holidays.

What’s the cost?

Each person will pay a registration fee of £50 for the year. This is a very small contribution to the costs of running Chameleon Youth. All members will be expected to support Company Chameleon in fundraising activities, which could range from bag packing in a local supermarket, to fun sponsored activities, or Christmas raffles! We want everyone to have the opportunity to take part in Chameleon Youth regardless of financial circumstances. If it’s difficult to find the registration fee, please chat to us about how we can help.

What happens after a year?

Company Members will be continually monitored throughout the year, to ensure that we’re meeting your expectations through the training and opportunities we provide, and that you’re meeting ours! We will always do our best to support young people’s aspirations, provided they continue to demonstrate commitment and show responsibility for their own learning. At the end of each year we will hold another try-out for existing company members, and new individuals interested in joining Chameleon Youth.

How will I continue to develop if accepted into Chameleon Youth for an additional year/s?

As you progress through the company, there will be opportunities to:

  • Make your own work and develop choreographic talents
  • Increase confidence and leadership skills through teaching and peer-to-peer mentoring
  • Receive support and advice about your own creative ideas and how to take your artform forward

In the first year there is the opportunity to achieve a Bronze Arts Award and we will explore the potential of delivering Silver and Gold Arts Award, based on the demand for this from the groups.

What do I do now?

If you would like to be a part of Chameleon Youth, then sign up now for this free Try-Out session. This is your opportunity to show off your raw talent and enthusiasm, and be in with a chance of joining Company Chameleon's exciting youth dance company!
