Championing Chatty Children

For: Universal EYFS* (excluding Schools and OOS)

*Universal EYFS = All Practitioners working with EYFS children in a Day Nursery, Pre-School, or as a Childminder

Despite the work undertaken over the last decade to support young children’s speech, language and communication; children are not achieving expected levels of development on entry to school. It is widely recognised that much support is still required in this area to develop communication skills of all children especially the most disadvantaged.

This inspirational course will explore new government initiatives and key documents to support children’s development in communication and language, including supporting parents/carers in the home learning environment. It is designed to build on previous ECAT training and the E learning module. It aims to support practitioners to share with Ofsted how you are supporting language development in your setting.

The Department for Education have recently launched their national campaign ‘Chat, Play, Read’ to support parents on how to fit quality interactions into their daily routines. We will look at how early years settings can support parents to develop children’s communication, language and literacy skills and promote the campaign with them.

Course aims and objectives

  • Consider key documents and governmental drivers to support children’s speech, language and communication needs
  • Review how the new Education Inspection Framework outlines the need to develop good speech, language and communication and how the intent, implementation and impact of this can be shown during a learning walk
  • Review good practice strategies from every child a talker programme (ECaT)
  • Consider the home learning environment and the impact of positive parental involvement
  • Discuss the benefits and pitfalls of modern technology on children’s learning
  • Consider further strategies to develop children’s vocabulary such as using mind mapping, vocabulary planning and dialogic book talk
